Why Do You Need a Sworn Translation?

In Spain, a standard certified translation has no legal value for official procedures.

To be accepted by the Oficina de Extranjería, a Spanish Notary, or the Civil Registry, your UK birth certificate must be translated by a Traductor Jurado: a sworn translator officially appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAEC).

Only these translations are official: they carry the sworn translator’s seal, signature and registration number.

Navigating the Requirements for UK Citizens

To prepare your birth certificate for the Spanish authorities, follow these key steps:

  • The Apostille of the Hague: Before translation, your document must be legalised by the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) in the UK. This confirms its authenticity for use in Spain.
  • Long-Form vs. Short-Form: Most Spanish authorities require the “Long-Form” birth certificate, which includes full parental names and places of birth, essential for residency, citizenship, and family reunification applications.
  • Entity-Verified Accuracy: Our team ensures every detail (from seals and stamps to handwritten annotations) is faithfully reproduced in the sworn translation, preserving the document’s legal integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to translate the long-form or short-form birth certificate?

Spanish authorities (especially Extranjería) almost always require the long-form version, as it includes parental details necessary for verifying identity and lineage.

Does the translation need an Apostille?

Yes, the UK birth certificate itself must bear an FCDO Apostille before translation. The sworn translation does not require a separate Apostille, but the original document must be legalised first.

How long does the translation take?

The certified digital version usually takes 2–3 working days; paper adds about 2 days. 24-hour or next-day delivery is possible only exceptionally, at a premium and once we confirm it.

Is a digital sworn translation valid for my TIE appointment?

Usually yes. Sworn translators can sign their translations electronically (Orden AUC/213/2025), and most offices accept the certified digital version, including for TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) applications. Check with your office before ordering.
